Baby Nguyen Binh Minh (9 months old, living in village 5, Plei Kan town, Ngoc Hoi district, Kon Tum province) lies tired on a hospital bed. The body is skinny, just skin and bones. The child’s face is deformed because of a cleft palate. The baby fell asleep in his mother’s arms after a fever and convulsions.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nha (26 years old, Minh’s mother) had tears in her eyes. At 6 months pregnant, she collapsed when the doctor told her the fetus had a cleft palate. She still encouraged herself that many children with the same fate had found a smile after surgery. She told herself to try hard to work so that in the future she would have the opportunity to have surgery for her child.

Ironically, her son was born prematurely, and in addition to having a cleft palate, he also suffered from gastric reflux disease. For 4 months since his birth, baby Minh’s life has been closely linked to the hospital. Gastroesophageal reflux disease causes the child to vomit everything after drinking milk or taking medicine. Because of that, the child’s body also suffered from severe malnutrition. At 9 months old, baby Minh only weighs 4kg, is pale and weak.

“After 4 months, my child returned home from the hospital. Because of that, my husband became bored, became addicted to alcohol, and cursed. Then he beat his wife, called his mother-in-law to come take his wife and children home, otherwise the I don’t know what will happen. My mother loves her children and grandchildren, so she swallowed her tears and accepted to take her and her children home. From then on, my husband never cared about her and her children again,” Ms. Nha told.

The family was broken, and Nha’s hopes were all for her children. However, as time went on, little Minh’s health became weaker and weaker, and many other diseases arose. The baby often had high, prolonged fevers and convulsions due to blood infection. But until now, doctors have not found any disease.

Ms. Nha used to be a student at a famous university in Da Nang. After 2 years of studying, because her family’s circumstances were too difficult, she had to quit school midway and work as a hired laborer. Also here, she met and got to know her husband from Quang Ngai.
