Doctor Nguyen Ngoc Loi , Director of the Neonatal Center (Central Obstetrics Hospital), said that pregnant woman NTH (24 years old) gave birth to baby V. when the fetus was in the 40th week, by cesarean section. The baby weighs 4.6kg. However, from the child’s coccyx, a teratoma grew larger than the child’s body. The teratoma was observed in fluid form, weighing about more than 2kg.Hospital baby with a teratoma that is heavier than his body (photo taken before surgery to remove the tumor). The large tumor caused baby V. ‘s legs to always be in a sideways position, not straight. Ms. H. is pregnant for the first time, in a completely healthy condition, this is also the first time she gives birth. After birth, the patient receives special care to avoid superinfection of the tumor. From birth to before surgery, the tumor continued to grow, the patient ate and digested well.Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Danh Cuong , Deputy Director of the Prenatal Diagnosis Center (Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital), said that the pregnant woman was discovered that the fetus had a tumor defect quite early but was advised to keep the pregnancy, because Surgery can be performed to remove the tumor after birth. By the 32nd week of pregnancy, it was clearly determined that this was a teratoma in the sacral region, a rare anomaly.Doctors from the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital and Viet Duc consulted and came to the decision to surgically remove the teratoma for baby V. On the afternoon of December 10, this patient was transferred from the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Went to Viet Duc Hospital for observation one night before major surgery.Doctor Loi said that this surgery is expected to be difficult because the child is young and the tumor is too large. According to experts in the field of Pediatric Surgery, anesthesia for newborns is a particularly difficult step.Yesterday morning, after more than 2 hours of surgery, doctors from the Department of Pediatric Surgery (Viet Duc Hospital) successfully removed the teratoma from this patient’s body. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Bich , Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, said that since birth, the baby at the hospital . and the tumor weighed 4.6kg, but before going on the operating table, the patient with the tumor weighed 5kg.The tumor grew very quickly, so doctors decided it was necessary to operate on the patient as soon as possible. The tumor is a mixture of water, scalp, hair, 2 atrophied legs and 1 hand, stomach, intestines, and bladder. However, according to Dr. Bich , this tumor is not called a twin fetus because the tumor does not have a skull, face, or spine. The most difficult part of the surgery is that the tumor lies deep into the rectum and coccyx, easily leading to errors during surgery. In particular, the tumor invades the child’s pelvis and hip joint. If the doctor does not cut carefully, it will puncture the child’s rectum. To perform this major surgery, Viet Duc Hospital has prepared equipment more carefully than other surgeries and devised possible options during surgery because this is a special case. After surgery, the patient was awake and urinating well. The baby is currently receiving special care in the recovery room of the Department of Pediatric Surgery.
